Hyderabad: A 25-year-old man died by suicide after allegedly losing money on online betting games in Ibrahimpatnam, Rangareddy district on Wednesday.
The young man, identified as T Lingam, a resident of Toolekalan was addicted to playing online games and slowly started using online betting applications.
Lingam, had fallen prey to an online betting app, which eventually cost him substantial financial losses. Driven by his addiction, he had borrowed huge money from his friends, which he failed to return.
“He kept borrowing money to clear the debts taken to cover losses from online betting games, but was unable to repay it. This mounted mental pressure on him. However, he could be able to clear some debt, a large amount was still pending,” police officials said.
He was visibly upset for the past several days. Despite his family’s intervention and efforts to ease his mental pressure, the young man had attempted suicide by dousing himself with diesel and setting ablaze at his house on Sunday.
He suffered severe burns and was rescued and immediately shifted to the Osmania General Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday.
Based on a complaint from his family members, the Ibrahimpatnam police booked a case and investigation into the matter is underway.
