As international students continue navigating the admissions requirements for U.S. universities and colleges, understanding various English language proficiency tests is crucial.
Last week we discussed the TOEFL and IELTS. In this week’s column, we will delve into the Pearson Test of English (PTE) and the Duolingo English Test, two additional assessments from which students can choose, based on their application requirements for U.S. universities.
The Pearson Test of English is offered in two formats – the computer-based PTE Academic that is taken at a test center offered on multiple specified dates and timings each month and the PTE Academic Online that is remotely proctored and can be taken from home or another convenient location.
Both tests are two hours in duration and assesses candidates across three sections: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. The test utilizes a variety of question types, including multiple-choice questions, essays, and spoken responses. Scores on this test range from 10 to 90.

Over the last few years, another addition to the list of popular English proficiency assessments is the Duolingo English Test. This is an online test which can be taken at home or another location with a stable internet connection. The test duration is approximately 1 hour and is divided into two sections – mixed language skills, and speaking and writing samples.
Like other English proficiency tests, these sections also assess students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Scores are reported on a scale from 10 to 160. All four English proficiency tests, TOEFL, IELTS, PTE and Duolingo English Test present valuable options for students aiming to demonstrate their English language proficiency. It is essential to check the specific requirements of each university regarding accepted tests and score thresholds early in your preparation process.
In addition, websites of all four tests provide access to free practice test preparation material and students should attempt these to understand the format of the tests, their level of comfort with the format and the types of questions on each test. In addition, students looking to take online (at home) formats of the tests, must check with universities about the acceptability of this version.
It is essential for students to be aware of the general timelines for receiving scores on each of the four tests as they prepare to submit their applications to U.S. universities. For the TOEFL, test takers typically receive their scores within 6 days following their test date. IELTS results are usually available 13 days after the test, while PTE Academic scores can be expected within 5 business days.
The Duolingo English Test provides scores within 2 days of completion. If students need their scores urgently, some of these tests offer expedited options; further details can be found on the respective websites for each test.
