Hyderabad: Medak Cathedral is one of the largest churches in Telangana and is historically significant. It is scheduled to celebrate its centenary on December 25, 2024. Reverend Charles Walker Posnett and his family funded this cathedral, consecrated as the central place of worship for the Diocese of Medak in 1924. Characterized by majestic Gothic Revival architecture, spans 100 feet in width and 200 feet in length, with a capacity to hold 5,000 people.
The structure features imported mosaic tiles and decorative flooring laid by Italian masons. The bell tower stands at 175 feet, reportedly taller than the Charminar, sparking controversy with the Nizam of Hyderabad. The cathedral is renowned for its stained glass windows, depicting scenes from Christ’s life. Designed by John Bradshaw Gass, the church was constructed by British engineers and was completed in 1924, with additions made in the following decades.
