Nirmal/Mancherial: Despite cases being booked against them, millers continue to show negligence in handing over rice grains to the government in Nirmal district.
The government allotted 1.42 lakh metric tonnes of paddy belonging to 2023-24 Yasangi season to the millers, setting a target of handing over 95,942 metric tonnes in Nirmal district. The millers delivered 81,099 metric tonnes of rice so far. The millers are yet to deliver custom milled rice (CMR) 14,843 metric tonnes, showing a deficit of 15 percent.
The deadline of December 15 was set for the millers to deliver the rice grains. The delay in handing over the grains to the government indicates laxity of the millers in taking up the process of CMR in the district although officials review the activity at regular intervals and book cases against defaulting millers.
Significantly, the millers have not handed over 90,090 metric tonnes of rice of 2023-24 Vanakalam season to the government so far. This means, the millers need to return 1.06 lakh metric tonnes of rice of the two seasons to the government. The negligence of the millers is attributed to lack of supervision by the officials.
A total of 17 mills out of the total 76 mills located in the district were found to be defaulting the grains during inspections of the officials in the past. Cases were registered against seven millers under relevant sections of the Revenue Recovery Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita for failing to deliver rice grains worth Rs 107 crore.
Additional Collector (Revenue) Kishore Kumar said that efforts were being made to achieve 100 percent of the target to the district with regard to the CMR. He cautioned that action would be taken against the defaulting millers. He stated that criminal cases were being registered against the errant millers.
Meanwhile, millers delivered 32,343 metric tonnes of rice grains when compared to the target of 57,832 metric tonnes of 2023-24 Yasangi season in Mancherial district. They still need to give back 25,488 metric tonnes. They have handed over 72,316 metric tonnes of CMR, as against the target of 94,057 metric tonnes relating to 2023-24 Vanakalam season. The miller should return 21,740 metric tonnes of rice.
