Nalgonda: Farmers staged a protest in front of rice mills at Vemulapalli in Nalgonda district on Sunday, demanding purchase of paddy at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) as traders had allegedly formed a syndicate and were forcing farmers to sell their produce at cheap prices.
The paddy purchases at the local procurement centre continued to be tardy and the stocks moved to the yards were being rejected repeatedly on the pretext that the moisture content was above the permissible levels, the farmers said.
As the protest extended to the Addanki-Narketpally Highway, it caused traffic disruptions. Movement of vehicular traffic came to standstill on the entire stretch.
The farmers expressed their frustration, accusing rice millers of forming a syndicate to deceive them by buying paddy at lower prices. They demanded that the rice millers purchase the paddy immediately at the right price. As the ongoing struggle of farmers to receive fair compensation for their produce intensified Statewide, farmers insisted that the government should ensure that the rice millers adhere to the MSP and provide immediate relief to the agricultural community.
The situation remained tense as farmers awaited a response from the authorities to address their genuine grievances.
